The Cruising Fleet 2006 season will begin with practices in April and continuing into May.
In
the mid-70's the Cruising Class was formed so the small cruisers
on Gull Lake could race in club events, Ward Shurtz sailing a
Tanzer 22 lead the organization of these sail boats. To qualify
as a cruiser the boat must have offshore capabilities, be 26'
or less. Currently the cruisers race using the Portsmouth handicap.
Formed
to allow boats of all types to compete in races, the Cruising
Class or Handicap Fleet gives a rating to all boats based on speed
potential. A common start and "factored" or handicapped
results make for close and exciting races. The higher number of
crew persons required on these boats makes for great "crewing"
possibilities for members and friends of the Yacht Club. Monthly
social events are usually sponsored by this fleet as well.
